She sights a Bird – she chuckles –
She flattens – then she crawls –
She runs without the look of feet –
Her eyes increase to Balls –
Her Jaws stir – twitching – hungry –
Her Teeth can hardly stand –
She leaps, but Robin leaped the first –
Ah, Pussy, of the Sand,
The Hopes so juicy ripening –
You almost bathed your Tongue –
When Bliss disclosed a hundred Toes –
And fled with every one –
-By Emily Dickinson
This is a really sweet poem about a cat who instinctively tries to catch a bird. Unlike most of Dickinson’s poems, death does not play a part in this and this is thought to be down to her love for birds.
She sights a Bird – she chuckles is a gorgeous poem which simply but brilliantly describes the movements of nature. Emilly Dickinson was incredible at emotively describing nature, love and death. This poem is seen as a warm up to her later poems which , like She sights a Bird – she chuckles, were wrote in the Civil War.
