The Toronto photographer, Pete Thorne, has turned to taking photos of fat cats to change people’s ideas about them.
This isn’t the first time Pete Thorne has created a project on animals. Last year he decided to take photographs of elderly dogs, the photo series went viral and turned into a book named Old Faithful: Dogs of a Certain Age.
His focus has now turned to cats and we couldn’t be happier. It is named, Fat Cats: Large and in Charge. The aim is to abolish the idea that any cat over a certain weight is the typical Garfield type of cat – fat and dopey and only thinking about food. Thorne also states that he finds chubby cats the cutest of cats, but whenever you try to look for a picture of one online they are always mean, mocking photos of cats stuck in things.
Unlike when he took photos of the dogs, Thorne soon realised that cats completely freaked out when they arrived at his home studio making it a complete disaster, this is because cats are very peculiar about changes. Thorne travelled all around Toronto taking his glamorous shoots of the plus-size felines. He went through the effort of setting up studios in everybody’s house. He now aims to have a coffee table book of pleasantly plump portraits each with heartwarming and funny stories about the chubby cats featured.
Here are some of the chubby cats you can find in the book.
BeeDee
BeeDee is the cover star of the coffee table book and we just love her doughnut shirt. Her favourite thing to do is lie down on basically any piece of furniture you can think of and she loves people. She is constantly scouting for attention and, for this reason, has even got the nickname “Needy BeeDee”.
Marshmallow
Marshmallow is seven years old and is a rescue cat. She was so severely overweight when she was dumped at the shelter that she had very limited mobility and could barely even clean herself. She’s now on a very strict diet and is losing weight healthily, working towards her weight goal. Proud of you Marshmallow.
Smokes
It is hard to tell if this gorgeous Himalayan is chubby or just a big furball, her belly is nearly as big as her personality. In his spare time, he watches his owners cook (to make sure they are doing it right)
Luigi
Luigi has been a bit of a diva for the nine years of his life. He’s the boss in the house and has a stiff upper lip but secretly is very sweet and snuggles up in bed with his owners.
Edie
She’s a little reserved but she has brought her owners so much joy over the years. She also knocks down any stereotypes of chubby cats as she plays for hours, catches mice and just doesn’t let her size get in her way.
Crookshanks
He hates Mondays and loves Lasagna and I’m sure we can all relate to that. He sleeps a lot but always makes sure everybody knows that he in charge.
I have a big kitty some might call fat (it's mostly the fur). These are all great shots!
