Cat Facts

It doesn’t matter if you’re a cat lover or not, you have to respect that cats are truly so interesting. Here are some cat facts which might actually surprise you!

  1. Cats can drink salt water
    Considering their stereotypically afraid of the water, this useful trait means they’re a lot more prepared for sea than us humans. They have crazy kidneys which filter out salt water.

  2. Clowders 
    Can you take a guess what clowders means? It’s actually the word for a group of cats.
  3. They’ve endangered series 
    Cats are natural hunters, even domesticated cats have contributed to the extinction of 33 different species of mammals, birds and fish.
  4. Cats cannot taste sweet things
    They don’t have the genes to create the taste buds which allow a lot of other mammals to taste sugar. This also means they might not have the enzymes to stop their livers flooding with glucose.
  5. They sweat through their paws
    Cats do not have the same sweat glands as humans so to cool off they sweat through their paws. Not only this but their special scent in their sweat means they mark their territory with their paw pads too.

  6. Purrs can be a source of healing
    Cats also purr when they are in pain or feel nervous. Of course, they also purr when they’re not scared or injured but it’s worth knowing just in case
  7. Richest Cat
    There’s a cat with $13 million in his name after he was left the fortune in his owner’ will.
  8. Sleeping Beauties
    Cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping – 16 hours a day. Cats need a lot of energy to do all their super important tasks like hunting, playing and looking adorable.
  9. Cats are usually lactose intolerant 
    After weaning, cats bodies do actually change, and there is also lactose in bottled milk, which as mentioned earlier is bad for our kitties. Stop feeding your cats milk!

  10. Cat Alzheimer’s 
    Cats start to experience something similar to human dementia when they reach older ages. Cats will start to be a little confused and dazed, experts suggest being extra comforting and giving them blankets at night, if they show any of these symptoms.
  11. Human brain
    Cat’s brains are 90% similar to humans, which is more similar to dog’s brains.
  12. One big family
    The existence of cats has been seen all across the world for many years. A study actually showed that every single cat in the world can be traced back to one of five cats in Africa dating back to 8000BC.
  13. Nose-prints 
    Just like human’s fingerprints, cats noses have all kinds of bumps and ridges which are completely unique to them. Kitty criminals’ nose prints will be in the records forever.
  14. Newton’s cat door
    The early invention of the cat door or cat flap is attributed to none other than Sir Isaac Newton. There’s actually a funny story behind it; Newton made a big hole for the adult cat and a smaller hole for the kittens without realising the kittens would use the big hole too.
  15. 180-degree ears
    Cats can turn their ears 180-degrees by using all 32 of their muscles in their little ears. They can also move their ears separately, one at a time.
